Caring For Aging Veterans Over the Holidays

 In Military / Veterans

As the holidays approach, it’s important to remember that many of our Veterans can be housebound, lack transportation, or need extra support around this time.

Here are some ways that you can support Veterans during the holidays to honor a Veteran in your life and share the holiday spirit.

Connect with Other Veterans

Many community organizations host gatherings and get-togethers for Veterans around the holidays. If you are able to take a Veteran you know to one of these gatherings, it’s a great way for them to connect with other vets to share a shared experience and have a sense of belonging.

Make the Time

Simple visits can make the difference to a Veteran, especially on their health and well being. It can be easy to feel forgotten during the business of the holidays, and this is a great way to show that you care. Just showing up to show that you care and value the Veteran in your life can improve mood, lift spirits, and show respect and honor.

Consider your Gifts

Elderly and aging Vets may not be able to make the most of material items as gifts, and a meaningful gift can be a meal, a shared experience like looking at holiday lights, or taking the time to decorate their space and make it more festive.

Share Stories

Ask Veterans in your life to share stories and holiday memories. The way a Veteran experienced a holiday while in the service could be vastly different than how you experienced it. In asking a Veteran to share their stories and memories, it’s a great way to show respect and thank them for their service.

Perform Acts of Service

Make sure that an aging or ailing Veteran is comfortable and assist with errands. Especially with things like helping them find access to programs, such as the VA Aid and Attendance Pension, which can help your Veteran find caregiving assistance, even during the holidays.
